SUMMARY: The Director, Payroll is responsible for the timely and accurate processing of the company’s multi-state and UK payroll, and related accounting functions, by performing the following duties either personally or through the direction of others while ensuring compliance with external regulations, internal controls, policies, and procedures.

LOCATION: Nashville, TN office. BMI has transitioned back to working in the office on a regular hybrid schedule. At present, most team members are expected in the office three (3) days a week. Decisions regarding future transitions will take place in phases as BMI continues to closely monitor COVID-19 as employee safety is our priority.

Payroll Processing

  • Ensures accuracy and timeliness of company payroll processing.
  • Ensures payroll transactions are properly classified.
  • Ensures new pay rates, job changes, withholding deductions, IRS annual limits, etc., are entered in the HRIS and processed correctly.
  • Balances the payroll accounts; reconciles and resolves payroll discrepancies; prepares payroll and tax reports.
  • Determines payroll liabilities of employee federal and state income and social security taxes, and the employer's social security, unemployment, and workers compensation payments.
  • Stays current on, and ensures compliance with, relevant payroll, tax and employment law changes and updates.
  • Interprets company policies affecting payroll procedures, benefits and compensation reporting, seeking to maximize efficiencies.
  • Maintains payroll guidelines by creating and updating policies and procedures.
  • Provides guidance to management and staff on all payroll matters.
  • Manages payroll-related vendor relationships and contractual agreements.
  • Ensures appropriate procedures and self-audits are in place for accurate payroll processing; ensures payroll system integrity.
  • Oversees Time and Attendance System and the import/export data process; handles directly as needed.
  • Oversees automated file feeds, conducts vendor reconciliations, and initiates funding authorizations for company retirement plans (DC, DB, SERP and non-qual plans.)
  • Ensures flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts are administered correctly by initiating funding authorizations, providing appropriate detail to Accounting, and compiling data for periodic non-discrimination testing.
  • Prepares reports as requested.
  • Supports Accounting with payroll funding and bank interfaces, reconciliations and general ledger mapping, and journal entries.
  • Fulfills reporting responsibilities, including submission of required tax filings, statutory reports, garnishments, legal responses, tax remittances and payments.
  • Compiles information for workers’ compensation, financial, and other audits; serves as main point of contact for payroll-related audits and regulatory filings.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises a departmental employee. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Ability to use a keyboard and do manual tasks for prolonged periods throughout the workday.
  • Generally negligible physical effort, but occasional moving of 1 to 25 lb. items.
  • Extended hours beyond 40 as needed.
  • Occasional travel.
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent preferred.
Experience: Minimum 10 years prior payroll experience; minimum 5 years as head of payroll with payroll accounting experience. Experience working with a multi-state payroll required; experience with UK payroll strongly preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of HR policies and procedures, legal compliance and employment laws.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and HR Software, preferably Ceridian Dayforce.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels of the organization in a professional manner.
  • Current knowledge of payroll management best practices.
  • Experience working with and maintaining database systems and reports, as well as high degree of proficiency in working with spreadsheets, including the use of formulas and pivot tables.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple time-sensitive projects at the same time.
  • Proven ability to interpret, communicate and apply knowledge of tax implications on payroll as well as garnishments, payroll rules and regulations and legal compliance practices.
  • Ability to identify areas of inefficiencies, develop, and implement process improvement initiatives in the payroll, HRIS and accounts payable areas.
  • Assertive, self-starter, requiring minimal supervision.
License(s)/Certifications Required: Payroll certification preferred.
