Manager, Category
POSITION SUMMARY
Serves as a trusted advisor to internal and external stakeholders in a variety of indirect spend categories. Sources and onboards new vendors, supports enterprise-wide projects, manages procurement projects, and ensures that purchasing efforts are conducted in accordance with business policies, procedures, and requirements.
LOCATION
Nashville, TN office. BMI has transitioned back to working in the office on a regular hybrid schedule. At present, most team members are expected in the office three (3) days a week. Decisions regarding future transitions will take place in phases as BMI continues to closely monitor COVID-19 as employee safety is our priority.
FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Essential Functions: which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.
Category Management
- Participates in the development and definition of procurement categories and sub-categories.Acts as Procurement’s subject matter expert in all aspects of assigned categories, including suppliers, competitors, industries, and products/services.
- Develops and maintains partnerships with internal stakeholders to understand their procurement needs, employing a customer-centric approach to providing excellent support to cross-functional teams.
- Analyzes internal and external data to identify opportunities, risks, and drive value beyond cost.
- Initiates and manages category plans and projects of simple-to-medium complexity.
- Develops communication plans, sources project plans, processes maps, business cases, scope of work and specifications, total cost of ownership, spend and supply analyses, etc.
- Drives value beyond cost (i.e., risk mitigation, operational efficiencies, innovation, etc).
- Helps employees and suppliers troubleshoot issues to ensure the highest level of performance.
Contract Management
- Develops effective contracting and negotiation strategies for suppliers in the assigned categories.
- Facilitates the end-to-end contracting process, including reviewing, drafting, or editing contracts, and liaising with stakeholders.
- Maintains accurate and quality data in Procurement technology systems, including purchasing and contract management systems.
- Conducts detailed savings/avoidance analysis and projections.
Procurement Management
- Identifies and analyzes cost reduction, cost avoidance, and value-add opportunities.
- Contributes to setting, drafting, updating, and enforcing company policies, processes, and procedures.
- Develops procurement best practices and/or industry standards for assigned categories.
- Manages the RFx process, including proposal evaluation, supplier recommendation, selection, and the preparation of executive summaries.
- Conducts market and supplier research.
- Analyzes supplier pricing structures and quotes to resolve anomalies.
- Manages day-to-day supplier operational issues and project deadlines.
- Manages the Purchase Order process in compliance with applicable policy and procedure.
- Facilitates Month-End and Year-End close duties in collaboration with Accounts Payable and Financial Accounting.
- Supports the Senior Director of Procurement in executing sourcing strategies and other projects.
- Helps train, manage, and lead other procurement team members as applicable.
- Regular attendance.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May directly supervise Part-time Procurement Services Coordinator. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training P/T Coordinator; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employee; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education: Associate degree in related field required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred; or equivalent experience within purchasing environment.
Experience: Minimum five (5) years’ related experience in procurement, sourcing, contract negotiation, supplier management, and/or project management.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.
- Experience with purchasing tools and software.
- In-depth knowledge of contract, invoicing, and common negotiation terms.
- Strong familiarity with at least two of the following procurement categories: Software, IT Hardware, Professional Services, Facility Services, Contingent and Contract Labor, Capital Purchasing, Financial Services.
- Knowledge of standard procurement concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Solid organizational and time management & project management skills and the ability to execute on multiple projects, RFXs and contract negotiations simultaneously.
- Ability to analyze and interpret various markets, pricing, and indices with a creative approach to solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with emphasis on negotiation.
- Ability to understand related accounting policies and procedures.
- Attention to detail.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Access).
- Ability to work both independently as well as in a team environment.
SALARY RANGE
The specific base salary offered to a successful applicant will be based on individual qualifications, skills, experience, and education. The pay range is subject to change at any time based on various internal and external factors. The position may also be eligible for one or more performance-based bonuses.
